"It is very frequent to find, on a crime scene, evidence made of porous surfaces having been subjected to moisture or complete damping; found following a rain storm for example or from a trafficker's shipwreck! As we all know, fingerprint treatments comonly used on porous surfaces (Ninhydrin and DFO) are not of any utility in these wet situations, where the amino acids targetted by these techniques are dissolved in water. In situations like these, the standards of North-American treatment suggested only the Physical developer (and its derivatives) as the unique method to recover latent prints which can be found on an evidenciary exhibit. A new simpler and nondestructive technique, which can be included in the usual treatment sequence (DFO, Ninhydrin, Oil Red O, Physical Developer), now makes it possible to find such wet prints. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn the use of this new technique and how to apply it in a laboratory in order to observe first hand the results. A theoretical session will precede the lab practices in which you will learn about the research carried on in the discovery and use of this new technique by the Sûreté du Québec. A real case will also be presented. - Finally, the results of an independent study from the University of Technology of Sydney, Australia, will propose the chemical pathway of the ORO reaction, the search for an optimal formulation and the quality of the results obtained."
